Glow2B 1/35 German Dora Railway Gun Limited Edition.
The kit was named Model of the Year 2007 at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg.
The largest plastic model kit (polystyrene plastic) of a cannon ever produced.
Includes photo-etched parts, screws, coil springs, aluminum rails, and a plastic track slide. The gun barrel is 1300 mm long and can be mounted flexibly (swivelled upwards). The kit offers 96 black plastic sprues and 147 loose parts, including 80 wheels, 16 parts for the chassis frame and 6 parts for the gun barrel. The largest and most elaborate guns in the world that were actually used were called Dora and Schwerer Gustav.
These special guns are often mistakenly referred to as railroad guns, but the short tracks were only used for construction and as a firing curve for aiming. The Krupp company built the two gigantic cannons in the years 1937-1941.
The guns had hydraulic sliding handle locks, the gun consisted of a casing tube and a core tube, which were stored in a cradle.
This was mounted between two long wagon beams, which were mounted on the eight 5-axle bogies via intermediate beams.
The entire load was divided over 2 parallel tracks.
The cannon received power from its own generator, including for the electric motors on some axes for fine tuning when aiming.
The only combat mission was during the siege of the fortress of Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula.
From 5 June to 2 July 1942, 48 armour-piercing shells were fired at the city’s fortifications, later another 5 rounds of HE shells (4 at sea and one at Maxim Gorky I).
Another target was an ammunition depot 30 meters underground and underwater with the entire 2-year supply of ammunition from the fortress of Sevastopol.
16 shots were fired at this target and a tall column of smoke was observed.
